Indigenous Sport Program

The Indigenous Sport Program (ISP) is funded by the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts (DCITA) and administered nationally by the Australian Sports Commission (ASC). In the Northern Territory the program is delivered by Sport and Recreation through a memorandum of understanding with the Australian Sports Commission.

This national program aims to improve the participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in sport and recreation as athletes, coaches, sports administrators and trainers.

In the Northern Territory, ISP officers assist in the coordination of sport and recreation initiatives in remote Aboriginal communities. To this end they work with NT peak sporting organisations to develop their sport in remote communities and also assist Sport and Recreation Officers in remote communities to increase opportunities and deliver sport and recreation programs.

ISP officers are located in all regions and are aligned with DCITA. Two ISP officers are based in Darwin. Two officers are also located in Alice Springs with one officer located in each of the Nhulunbuy, Katherine and Tennant Creek regions.
