Indigenous Sport Unit

The Department of Sport and Recreation's Indigenous Sport Unit's purpose is to increase Indigenous participation in sport and active recreation through:
  • support in program development and planning;
  • skills development; and
  • providing access to resources and facilities.

The Indigenous Sport Unit (ISU) is funded by and aligned to the Australian Sports Commission through its Indigenous Sport Program. The ISU has Regional Coordinators based in Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs.

The ISU works closely with Local Government Shires, remote Indigenous communities and Community Sport and Recreation Officers to identify specific community sport and recreation needs. By working closely with sport development coordinators, Northern Territory peak sporting bodies, recreational organisations and other service providers, the ISU provides ways to address these organisations' needs.
