Coaching and Officiating

OFFICIATING

Officials have a tough and often unappreciated role in sport. They commonly receive abuse from players, coaches and spectators, but without them there would be no game. This Office recognises that the recruitment and retention of officials is vital to all sports and provides training and development opportunities for officials. Some of these initiatives include:

General Principles of Officiating

General Principles of Officiating was developed by the Australian Sports Commission and is nationally recognised as an essential prerequisite to all sports specific officiating training. Modules include risk management, conflict resolution, communication and self reflection.

Courses can be conducted by Sport and Recreation on a request basis and can be modified to suit your needs. For example we can present modules for school students and specific sports groups – call our office on 1800 045 678 for more information.

Respect the Official

We don't want to lose 'em, so don't abuse 'em. In the last 5 years there has been a 30% decline in sport officials. Of particular concern is the abuse young volunteer officials receive from the sideline.

Each year this Office is committed to running the "Respect the Official" campaign at as many sporting venues and events throughout the Territory as possible. During the campaign spectators, coaches and players are given a Chupa Chup lollipop and a business card that says “Try it today – instead of giving the ump a mouthful, give yourself one and have a Chupa Chup.

If you would like this the Respect The Official Campaign conducted in your sporting community please contact the Office on

Beginning Coaching General Principles Course

The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) has released a new online course for beginner coaches. The Beginning Coaching General Principles online course has been developed to assist coaches to learn the basic skills of coaching. It is especially aimed at those coaching children.

The online course is initially available free of charge to Australian coaches (must have an Australian postal address). This is due to a subsidy provided by the Australian Sports Commission, as an initiative to encourage beginner coaches to undertake training.

A major benefit of the online course is that coaches can complete it in their own time, from the comfort of their own home.

About the course
The course contains five modules, which cover a range of general coaching topics, including the role and responsibilities expected of a coach, planning, safety, working with parents, communication, group management and inclusive coaching practices when working with people with a disability or special population groups. The course takes approximately 6 hours to complete, and there is assessment included withing the course. Couches have 6 months to complete the course after they register.
